Starting with the Presidential elections of 1948, do you have any favorites whom you would have preferred to win the Dem or Rep Party's nomination instead of the victor in the primary?

For openers, I preferred Nelson Rockfeller over Goldwater in 1964 because of his moderate positions and awareness we should have loser ties with Latin America.

I preferred Henry "Scoop" Jackson over McGovern in 1972 and Carter in 1976 because of his non-hypocritical approach to integration and muscular foreign policy vs. the Soviets.

Damn, should read "closer ties" .. another typo.

Edwards in 2004; he might have won it whereas Kerry didn't.

Cranston or Askew in 84 (instead of Mondale)

Bradley instead of Gore in 2000

Present election... Duncan Hunter (#1 pick) or Fred Dalton Thompson (#2 pick) over John McCain.

2000... Alan Keyes over GWB

1996... Richard Lugar over Bob Dole

1988... Either Bob Dole or Jack Kemp over GHWB

I split party ranks and voted for him in 92.

I'm an independent, but I voted for Ross, too.

I know he was quirky, and that sank him, but he got the campaign focused on issues that could be solved rather than empty talk of schemes which would never happed.

Sort of like Romney's claim that, if he was elected, he'd bring back the auto industry. Oh, yeah? How?

I thought we needed someone with some good business sense in the office to make the fed beaurocracy smaller and more efficient, amoung other things. I still think so.

Perhaps the pool of lawyers and politicians isn't the talent pool we need to tap for our presidential candidates.

I don't recall ever being entertained by any politician like I was by Ross.

He should do stand up.

Jesse Jackson. I mean, come on, a racist, womanizing, bigot, extortionist scumbag. It's like all the different types of politicians rolled into one fat ball of crap. At least with him we'd never be surprised by anything he did.

"Did you hear, The president had an affair!"
"Did you hear, the president has been embezling money!"
"Did you hear, the president said something racist!"
"Did you hear, the president hates Jews!"
"Did you hear, the president 0has been engaging in business practices with a despotic african tyrant who has killed hundreds of thousands!"

We could respond to all of them with "That's our Jesse!"

But yeah seriously, no, I can't think of anyone.

I like Kerry better than any democrat running this up coming election. I wish he'd have stayed in the fight a while longer.

I wish Jerry Brown had been the nominee in '76 or '80. Then maybe Linda Ronstadt would have ended up as First Lady.

*sigh*

I'm going to start in 1968, rather than 1948.

Nelson Rockefeller for the Republicans in 1968. Eugene McCarthy for the Democrats (unless RFK had not been assassinated - then I'd go with RFK).

Hubert Humphrey for the Democrats in 1972.

John Anderson for the Republicans in 1980. I voted for Anderson in the general election.

Gary Hart for the Democrats in 1984.

Bruce Babbitt for the Democrats in 1988; Pierre DuPont for the Republicans in 1988.

Paul Tsongas for the Democrats in 1992.

John McCain for the Republicans in 2000 (wouldn't have voted for him in the general election, but he was by far the best Republican running).
